One of the world’s oldest continuously operating movie studios, Universal presents an entertaining mix of fairly tame – and sometimes dated – thrill rides, live-action shows and a tram tour. It is a working studio, but the chances of seeing any action, let alone a star, are slim to none.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

Honoring luminaries in motion pictures, television, radio, live theatre, and recording since 1960, this famous sidewalk is one of the city’s most beloved free attractions.

It comprises more than 2,500 five-pointed terrazzo and brass stars embedded in the sidewalks along 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and three blocks of Vine Street. Each of the handsome terrazzo-and-brass stars costs about $30,000 to install and maintain.

Venice Beach

Venice has always been known as a hangout for the creative and the artistic. In the 1950s and 60s, Venice became a center for the Beat generation. Today it is a vibrant area of Southern California well known for its artists, street performers and funky atmosphere. It is almost like virtual carnival running year round with free admission.

Venice is as much about sand & surf as it is about restaurants and people watching. If you want to avoid sand in your shoes, take a walk along the famous Ocean Front Walk, a two-and-a-half-mile pedestrian promenade that features performers, fortune-tellers, skaters, artists and vendors not to mention shopping.

Rodeo Drive (shopping)

Apart from the stars, the movies and the sea, shopping seems to be an obvious activity around in Los Angeles. The best place to do that is certainly Rodeo Drive of Beverly Hills, a four block stretch of road north of Wilshire Boulevard and south of Santa Monica Boulevard. The street is home to some of the region's most sought-after stores including Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermès, Burberry and Coach. The neighboring streets like Wilshire, Dayton Way and North Beverly Drive, also have many luxury stores and restaurants.

Disneyland

Abalone Cove Beach

Abalone Cove (along with Sacred Cove) beach is part of the Abalone Cove Ecological Reserve and can offer you tide pools, bluff top viewing areas and trails. Besides, you can admire all the sea caves, black sand and rare plants, without mentioning its location on the Palos Verdes peninsula that gives it some of the best views of Catalina Island you'll find anywhere.

Surfing
Good waves don't arrive often at Abalone Cove, but when they do the locals come out in numbers and enjoy the break. The area is best for experienced surfers. Sharp rocks pose a hazard.

Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach is a classic southern California beach with volleyballs, surfers and sunbathers. The South Bay Bicycle Trail and a pedestrian only walkway run through the beach and is great place to jog and bike. Here you can find some of the most expensive real estate in California. Every August, the city hosts the Manhattan Beach Open Volleyball tournament and the International Surf Festival. It is one of the three Beach Cities in the South Bay.

Many dining and shopping options are available in nearby Downtown Manhattan Beach.

Farmers Market

The Farmers Market feateures more than 100 restaurants in the form of food stalls, sit-down eateries, prepared food vendors and produce markets.

The market started when a dozen nearby farmers would park their trucks on a field to sell their fresh produce to local residents. Today, it’s located just south of CBS Television City and open seven days a week. The dozens of vendors serve many kinds of food, both American cuisine from local farmers and Los Angeles' variety of local ethnic foods from the many immigrant communities of Los Angeles, with many Latin American and Asian cuisines well represented.

Six Flags Magic Mountain

Six Flags delivers thrills for all but the most joyless and crowdphobic holidaymakers. The park offers rollercoasters and water rides for every level of screamer: while there are some gentle rides here, the park is most famous for the ones that'll push your heart into your mouth and your lunch on to the person sitting in front of you. It's a raucous place, both on the rides and off them: if you've got very young kids in tow, Disneyland and Universal Studios are both better bets.

Knott's Berry Farm
