Speicherstadt is the world’s largest “warehouse city”. It is here that precious goods like tea, coffee, spices, cocoa, tobacco, computers, and oriental carpets and rugs used to be stored. Today, The Speicherstadt holds ground for museum exhibitions that attract thousands of visitors. The biggest attraction is Miniatur Wunderland, a model railway museum. Hamburg Dungeon that shows evidences of the city’s darker times and the Afghan Museum, a private-owned Afghanistan-themed museum, are parts of The Speicherstadt district.

Built at the turn of the last century, it constitutes an important Hamburg landmark and is one of the main attractions of the harbor boat trips. The architectural details, narrow canals and the romantic Wilhelmine Gothic style constructions convey an idyllic atmosphere.

Speicherstadt belongs to the newly developed quarter HafenCity, which forms a lovely contrast with its modern architecture. At sunset, the Speicherstadt is engulfed in a mysterious atmosphere when the facades of the red brick buildings and steel bridges are artfully illuminated.
