General info:

The Tierpark Hagenbeck is the official name of the Hamburg Zoo. It was built in the early 20th century, but was destroyed in an air raid during the WWII. Being a favorite place for Hamburg citizens, it was rebuilt to the exact look as before the demolition. The Tierpark Hagenbeck was the first zoo in the world which used moats instead ordinary cages to keep the animals separated. That way the animals got more free room, similar to their natural habitats. Currently, the Hamburg zoo houses almost 2,000 animals of more than 200 species.

Getting there:

The Hamburg zoo is located in Lokstedter Grenzstraße 2, with Hagenbecks Tierpark subway station just outside.
