Svartifoss is one of the extraordinary waterfalls of Iceland. It is surrounded surreal looking hexagonal dark lava columns, from where it also got its name.

Svartifoss (Black Fall) is one of the most popular sights in the in Skaftafell National Park. The falls are relatively easy to access and view from up close, and the flow is good all year-round in a landscape of glaciers, volcanoes, and large tracts of black sand.

Be careful when walking around, the base of Svartifoss is noteworthy for its sharp rocks. New hexagonal column sections break off faster than the falling water wears down the edges.

If you are visiting Svartifoss, make sure not to miss the Jökulsárlón clacier that is nearby.

Getting there:

If you have a car, you can park at the Skajftafkell visitor center, where the trail to the falls starts. From here it is about 1,5km hike uphill to the falls.

If you don´t have an own car, you can find organized tours at least from Reykjavik Excursions.

Also bus 20 and 20A goes daily from Reykjavik to Skajftafkell.

The entrance to Skaftafell National Park and Svartifoss is free.
